Participants sit in a circle. The leader of the workshop takes any small, easily handled object in the room e.g. a pen, notebook, informing the participants that it is an extremely rare artefact, and that they must explain what it is, as antiques experts. They take it in turns to handle the object as it goes around the circle, offering a creative explanation for its design and function. It is advisable to give the participants a time limit on this of perhaps 40-60 seconds, as this makes their explanations more succinct.

the same. Here are a few examples of how to use tableaux effectively Basic tableaux

Put into groups of 4/5 – mixing friendship groups

They are then given a situation and 2 minutes to create a Still Image of an event – ‘Wedding’, ‘Christening’, ‘Funeral’, ‘Surprise Party’ camp fire

Count down from 5, use count to assume the Still Image position for audience to observe, (or could do it as a competition, which group can do it faster). Exercise is really adaptable and can be cross referenced to other curricular lessons, base on particular themes, history, science etc. i.e. famous historical images such as ‘The Battle of Hastings’, or Rosa Parks.

Before each new still image, change the groups to ensure that the students work in different groups each time

Come back to a circle and ask what made various still images effective

Example; Two people shake hands. Freeze the image. Discuss the meaning of the image.

Then in pairs start with the frozen image of a handshake. B then steps out of the action and asks what is happening, B then returns and completes the image in a new way, showing a new meaning. This process is then repeated with A changing the image. Learners should think about body language and posture, what communication are the images giving off.
